Creating our film on bereavement and grief
Funded by the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, Community Resilience Fund, Youth Out Loud! (YOL!) have created a video which introduces other young people to the subject of bereavement.
To help create our film on bereavement and our information page on yolweb we engaged with a local GP and a bereavement councillor from Kingston Bereavement Support for their input. We asked them what they see on a regular basis in their practice when dealing with bereavement, what are the key messages they want us to include in the video, yolweb and on any promotional material such as social media posts.
They both shared the same definition of bereavement and grief, which you find in the video along with information you can see on our 'find help' page on yolweb.
As part of the YOL! digital youth project, YOL! members created this film with youth educator Steve Slavin. The film style uses the same format as previous films, which has young people texting about health and care issues.
The video deliberately avoids discussing bereavement topics in detail, as these may be sensitive and YOL! members working on this project felt it would be more helpful to keep this film as an introduction to bereavement.
YOL! is a group of young people helping to improve our local health and social care services. Working with Healthwatch Kingston and using their voices to make health and care services better for young people.
When creating the film on bereavement YOL! wanted to create a video which introduced the subject of bereavement without focusing in on one element of bereavement or grief.
This leaves young people free to explore more on the subject.
YOL! engaged a Kingston youth group during the development of the film and incorporated the idea of grieving for someone who is still alive but has had a life changing diagnosis such as dementia.
Healthwatch Kingston supported YOL! to engage with 57 young people (aged between 13 and 19). 75% of whom did not know what bereavement meant and only 25% knew what bereavement meant, which is why YOL! moved the definition of bereavement and grief to the beginning of the film.
